Is it worth paying for iLovePDF?

Short answer: Probably not, and the reason is not the money. iLovePDF is good software and its free tier does a lot. But every one of these sites works by uploading your PDF to their servers, and the files people most often need to merge or split are contracts, payslips, bank statements, medical letters and passport scans. This page does the same page operations without the upload, because a browser can already read and write a PDF on its own. Pay iLovePDF if you need the things that genuinely need a server: converting to and from Word, OCR on a scan, or real compression.

Where the paywall sits

iLovePDF's own pricing page in September 2026 shows a free tier that works but is fenced: limited document processing, web only, and per tool caps, including compress limited to 2 files, merge to 25 files, and image to PDF to 20 images, with file size limits from 15 MB to 400 MB depending on the tool. Premium is AUD$7 a month billed yearly, which is AUD$84 a year, or AUD$11 month to month, and lifts those caps, adds the desktop and mobile apps, removes ads and includes AI credits. Prices and caps were read from ilovepdf.com; check them before you buy, and note the free tier is genuinely usable for occasional jobs.

Smallpdf and Adobe's online tools follow the same shape: a free tier with a daily cap, a subscription to remove it. All three upload your document. That is not a criticism of their security, it is simply how a web service works, and it is the one thing they cannot stop doing.

What is actually free elsewhere. Stirling PDF is open source and does far more than this page, if you are willing to run it yourself. On a Mac, Preview merges and reorders pages for nothing. On Windows, the print to PDF driver will merge in a pinch. This page is for when you want it in a browser tab, on any machine, without an upload and without installing anything.

What the free version here does

Merge as many PDFs as you like into one, in whatever page order you arrange.
Split: pick the pages you want and save them as a new PDF, or save every selected page as its own file.
Delete pages, rotate them a quarter turn at a time, reverse the order, and move any page anywhere.
Select by clicking thumbnails, or by typing a range the way you would say it: 1-3, 5, 8-10. Odd and even pages have their own buttons, which is what a double sided scan needs.
No file size limit beyond what your own device can hold, no daily cap, no watermark, no account and no ads.
Nothing is uploaded. There is no server to upload to. Open the network tab and watch.

When paying might still make sense

You need PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, or the reverse. Reliable conversion needs a document engine that does not fit in a browser tab.
You need OCR, to turn a scan into text you can select and search.
You need real compression. This page does not compress, because honest compression means re-encoding the images inside the file, and the shortcut of rasterising every page silently destroys the text. Better to say so than to ship a button that quietly wrecks a document.
You need to sign or certify with a real digital certificate, or to add and remove passwords.
You want desktop and mobile apps, batch workflows, or a team account.

How this one stays free

It runs entirely in your browser. There is no server to pay for, nothing is uploaded, and the code is open source. There is nothing to cancel because there was nothing to sign up for.
